Let’s knock down social media’s walled gardens by Tim Berners-Lee #internet

We should start with the things we need to fix. At the top of the list is the polarisation of opinion in the huge set of people who use social media. We know the mechanism inside this involves a company whose bottom line is determined by the time people spend on a platform. When the platform sets up the selection feed to optimise for engagement, the feed selects things that make people angrier and serves them progressively more extreme views.

Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law - Ars Technica #copyrights

Piracy Shield is often labeled as draconian by opponents because blocking content via DNS is messy. It blocks the entire domain, which has led to confusion when users rely on popular platforms to distribute pirated content. Just last year, Italian ISPs briefly blocked the entire Google Drive domain because someone, somewhere used it to share copyrighted material. This is often called DNS poisoning or spoofing in the context of online attacks, and the outcome is the same if it's being done under legal authority: a DNS record is altered to prevent someone typing a domain name from being routed to the correct IP address.

A Win for Encryption: France Rejects Backdoor Mandate | Electronic Frontier Foundation #privacy

In a moment of clarity after initially moving forward a deeply flawed piece of legislation, the French National Assembly has done the right thing: it rejected a dangerous proposal that would have gutted end-to-end encryption in the name of fighting drug trafficking. Despite heavy pressure from the Interior Ministry, lawmakers voted Thursday night (article in French) to strike down a provision that would have forced messaging platforms like Signal and WhatsApp to allow hidden access to private conversations.

The vote is a victory for digital rights, for privacy and security, and for common sense.

Bizarre Minivan Concept From 1992 Had Two Levels and Futuristic Lines | Moss and Fog #design #history

Concept cars are meant to push boundaries, but the 1992 Italdesign Columbus went all out. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign, this massive luxury van looked like a mix between a bullet train and a superyacht on wheels.

At nearly 20 feet long, the Columbus was powered by a BMW V12 engine, featured six plush seats in a 2-2-2 layout, and had a central driving position like the McLaren F1.

Photographer's Once-in-a-Lifetime Shots of the Lunar Eclipse and Aurora | PetaPixel #nature #photography

Professional landscape and travel photographer Dan Zafra, known for his website Capture the Atlas, traveled from his home in Nevada to the wilds of Alaska last week to capture the total lunar eclipse against a beautiful backdrop of the Northern lights.

When he realized that there was going to be an opportunity to see the aurora the same night as the total lunar eclipse, also known as the Blood Moon, Zafra went for it. His boldness paid off as he was treated to clear skies and beautiful, vibrant green Northern lights.

Chinese EV maker BYD says fast-charging system could be as quick as filling up a tank | Electric, hybrid and low-emission cars | The Guardian #technology

The Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has unveiled a new charging system that it said could make it possible for EVs to charge as quickly as it takes to refill with petrol.

BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares gained 4.1% on Tuesday to hit a record high of 408.80 Hong Kong dollars, as investors bet that the company could strengthen its already commanding position as one of the world’s biggest electric carmakers.

How do cars get their names? Art, science, and a legal process. | Popular Science #interesting

Unless it’s a car made by Christian von Koenigsegg or Mate Rimac, the vast majority of vehicles on the market are named by committee, so there is more research and less pressure on one person to bear the blame. Some automakers take the easy way and give their cars alphanumeric soup monikers.
