POSSE - IndieWeb #internet #publishing

POSSE is an abbreviation for Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere, the practice of posting content on your own site first, then publishing copies or sharing links to third parties (like social media silos) with original post links to provide viewers a path to directly interacting with your content.

Why

Let your friends read your posts, their way. POSSE lets your friends keep using whatever they use to read your stuff (e.g. social media silos like Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Neocities, etc.).

Stay in touch with friends now, not some theoretical future. POSSE is about staying in touch with current friends now, rather than the potential of staying in touch with friends in the future.

Friends are more important than federation. By focusing on relationships that matter to people rather than architectural ideals, from a human perspective, POSSE is more important than federation. Additionally, if federated approaches take a POSSE approach first, they will likely get better adoption (everyone wants to stay in touch with their friends), and thereby more rapidly approach that federated future.

POSSE is beyond blogging. It's a key part of why and how the IndieWeb movement is different from just "everyone blog on their own site", and also different from "everyone just install and run (YourFavoriteSocialSoftware)" etc. monoculture solutions.

60 Free Film Noir Movies You Can Watch Online, Including Classics by John Huston, Orson Welles & Fritz Lang | Open Culture #movie #art #culture

During the 1940s and 50s, Hollywood entered a “noir” period, producing riveting films based on hard-boiled fiction. These films were set in dark locations and shot in a black & white aesthetic that fit like a glove. Hardened men wore fedoras and forever smoked cigarettes. Women played the femme fatale role brilliantly. Love was the surest way to death. All of these elements figured into what Roger Ebert calls “the most American film genre” in his short Guide to Film Noir.

60,000-year-old traces of world's oldest arrow poison reveal early advanced hunting techniques #history

Researchers from South Africa and Sweden have found the oldest traces of arrow poison in the world to date. On 60,000-year-old quartz arrowheads from Umhlatuzana Rock Shelter in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, researchers have identified chemical residues of poison from the plant gifbol (Boophone disticha), a poisonous plant still used by traditional hunters in the region.

"This is the result of a long and close collaboration between researchers in South Africa and Sweden. Being able to identify the world's oldest arrow poison together has been a complex undertaking and is incredibly encouraging for continued research," says Professor Sven Isaksson at the Archaeological Research Laboratory, Stockholm University, an expert in the analysis of organic residues in archaeological materials who carried out the chemical analyses.

World's first gaming headset that can listen to your brain unveiled #technology

From esports labs to everyday gaming

According to Neurable, the technology builds on its neurofeedback platform, called Prime, which has been tested with both everyday gamers and semi-professional esports athletes. In preliminary studies referenced by the company, participants using the system during first-person shooter training sessions showed measurable performance improvements.

On average, everyday gamers using the system improved reaction times by 43 milliseconds, increased accuracy by 0.53 percent, and hit nearly nine additional targets during a psychometric target-shooting task. Among collegiate and professional esports players, the gains were more pronounced, with accuracy rising by nearly 3%, reaction times decreasing by 38 milliseconds, and participants hitting an average of 21 additional targets.

The idea, Neurable says, is not to control games directly with thoughts, but to help players understand how mental states such as focus and cognitive load influence performance. The headset provides real-time feedback based on brain activity, allowing users to adjust their play or training routines accordingly.

Josephine Tan, Senior Vice President and Division President of Personal Systems Gaming Solutions at HP Inc., said the collaboration reflects HyperX’s focus on performance-driven gaming hardware. She noted that the goal is to give players clearer insight into how cognitive skills and focus affect gameplay, to help them become more competitive.

Vietnam Bans Unskippable Ads, Requires Skip Button to Appear After 5 Seconds - Saigoneer #internet

Meta runs banned online gambling ads despite local laws - Rest of World #internet #bigcorp #society #copyrights

Between 2021 and 2024, India saw a surge of popularity in online gambling, as increasingly cheap mobile data and expanded access to smartphones fueled use of the games. Driven by concerns around illegal operations, Indian authorities summoned Meta and Google last summer to discuss their role in promoting gambling sites. In August, the Indian government banned all forms of real-money online gambling and its promotion, joining many countries across South and Southeast Asia as well as the Middle East.

A new Rest of World analysis reveals that illegal online gambling ads continue to be widespread on Meta platforms in India, and around the world. In December alone, Rest of World found at least 140 banned ads running in India. The analysis also indicates Meta was running gambling ads in 12 additional countries, where they’re prohibited by law.

UK company sends factory with 1,000C furnace into space #technology

Space Forge have sent a microwave-sized factory into orbit, and have demonstrated that its furnace can be switched on and reach temperatures of around 1,000C.

They plan to manufacture material for semiconductors, which can be used back on Earth in electronics in communications infrastructure, computing and transport.

Conditions in space are ideal for making semiconductors, which have the atoms they're made of arranged in a highly ordered 3D structure.

When they are being manufactured in a weightless environment, those atoms line up absolutely perfectly. The vacuum of space also means that contaminants can't sneak in.

The purer and more ordered a semiconductor is, the better it works.

"The work that we're doing now is allowing us to create semiconductors up to 4,000 times purer in space than we can currently make here today," says Josh Western, CEO of Space Forge.
